FAQ

  • Please fill out this application form and we will get back to you. For any additional questions feel free to contact us at info@addi.rwth-aachen.de.

  • Previous experience is not nessesary to join ADDI in any position. Developing new skills is a big part of what we do so as long as you are willing to learn new things, we look forward to meeting you.

  • The Aachen Drone Development Initiative does not have a membership fee.

  • There is no formalised time requirement, and expected time investment varies depending on the project. You can expect roughly 4-6 hours per week subject to scheduing and avaliability. What is important is to contribute towards a project and reliably work during the duration of the project and in line with the agreed time investment.

  • Sure! You are more than welcome to send us an application tregarding a project or field of your interest, even if it is not explicitly listed below. There are always new things to work on, and we look forward to meeting you as well as getting to know you and your skills.

Current Projects

Autonomous Systems (IMAV 2025)

Data analysis and computer vision Engineer software development
Document, improve and expand our compuer vision and data analysis pipeline for obstacle avoidance, path folowing and localization
Simulation Engineer software development
Improve the quality of our ROS2/Gazebo Simulation and help with getting more results from the avaliable data
Electrical Engineer electronics
Design and fix the electrical components and layout of our competition drone to fly more reliably and stable
CAD Engineer hardware
Work on the CAD design of the new autonomous drone to ensure all requirements and performance metrics are met while ensuring manufacturability
Hardware integrations Engineer hardware
Facilitate colaboration between the hardware, software and electronics team to get our drone into the air smoothly
Flight testing Officer technical operations
Set up, manage, and analyse our flight test campaign to gather crucial data on performance and flight stability during development and refinement throughout the entire project

Endurance solar plane

Aircraft construction Engineer hardware
Be a part of building the aircraft body and assembly of its mechanical systems
Electronics Engineer electrical systems
Desin, manufacture and test the electrical system of the Endurance solar plane with a focus on efficiency and weight
Integrations Engineer hardware
Work with the electrical, mechanical and software engineering teams to ensure smooth integrations of the different sub-components.
Microcontroler software Developer software development
Write, test, and deploy code for our STM microcontroler that is the brains of our solar powered plane to enable long duration flights

tinyDrones

PCB Design Electrical systems, hardware
Designing the PCB of the Drone. You are welcome to experiment and build new modules such as ESCs for a brushless drone.
Controller Design Electrical engineering or automation engineering
Play with interesting approaches to design the controlling algorithms of the drone.
Programming Microcontrollers Computer engineering
Write low level Code to power the drone. You can for example develop drivers and interfaces to interact with the real world.
Simulation Development Simulation engineering
Setup an automated simulation enviroment to rapidly test and simulate software for the world.
Extra Development Whatever you can imagine
Think of experiments you want to design. The only limit is your imagination (and sometimes budget). You always wanted to build a tracking Radar? Try to do it!
